I figured it was time for a New Year’s update. First, a little recap of last year…

2006 was a year of fun and adventure, but also a year of growth and maturity. It was a year of positives, but also a year of negatives.

On the plus side, I turned 21, which made for a more exciting year. Brian and I celebrated our two-year anniversary by taking a road trip to Turning Stone and a Collective Soul concert. I got my internship out of the way, my grades got better with every term, and I managed to find a job for the summer to make some extra cash. My family took a vacation to Boston and the surrounding area, which was fun. I started my senior year here at EC (which is going by really fast, by the way). I took some fun road trips to visit friends, hung out with people I hadn’t seen in a long time, and made some new friends too. I recently got to see my uncle and cousin who live in Florida, which was nice because my family hadn’t seen them in 6 or 7 years.

On the negative side, I had to go to 2 family funerals in the past 4 months. I recently found out that 3 people I know are battling serious illnesses. My summer and winter break were pretty hectic at times, because I was working way more hours than I had intended to. I had to make a ton of doctor’s appointments over the past year, because of the whole thyroid thing, and now I have to take pills every day, most likely for the rest of my life. Not to mention that before my mom knew my thyroid problem was affecting my weight, she’d weigh me every day and basically accuse me of having an eating disorder. Also, my classes have been way more demanding than I thought they’d be, especially since I just want to have a relaxing senior year.

This past year was full of ups and downs, but I think it was a pretty good year overall. I definitely had fun and accomplished a lot in the last 12 months. I can only hope that the year 2007 is full of even more opportunities. I’m going to make sure to make the most of my senior year, and try and not let all my work get in the way of having fun and going out and taking road trips whenever I get the chance. After all, you’re only young once, and things just aren’t going to be the same after college. Hopefully in April and May, I’ll be spending term 3 in Brooklyn, making art and living the artsy life. Shortly after that is graduation, and then I’m planning on moving out of the Valley/Elmira area by the end of the summer (and hopefully I’ll have a graphic design job by then). My family is most likely going to be taking a two-week trip to Miami and the Florida Keys sometime this summer, so I’m looking forward to that. A trip to Italy would have been even better, but I’ll save that for when I have more money. I’m definitely going to go sometime, though.

All in all, 2007 looks like a very promising year. I don’t really like making New Year’s resolutions, so I’m not going to. I’m just going to try and live in the moment and have fun, and enjoy life and all the opportunities the upcoming year has to offer.

Sometimes it takes something unexpected and serious to make you realize how precious life is, and how we shouldn't worry so much about feeding our own selfish, shallow desires.

I have a few things I need to get off my chest. I haven't updated in a long, long time, but I think it's necessary at this point. I need somewhere to vent and reflect without feeling like I'm complaining to people. Besides, it's better than doing homework.

This whole insomnia/lack of appetite spell is really getting on my nerves. I have no idea why I feel this way...it's not like I'm depressed or anything. And I don't think I'm incredibly stressed out, although all the upper-level art courses are more demanding than I thought they'd be. It's my senior year and I feel like I should have more time to relax. At least next week is break...I can't wait!

Unfortunately, though, there isn't a single day over break that I have entirely to myself. I kinda wish I didn't agree to work on the weekends, but at the same time, I could use the extra cash, especially since I want to move away after I graduate.

That's another kinda scary topic...my impending graduation and everything that comes after it. I should probably start looking for jobs / revamping my resume / putting together a portfolio, but I just don't have the motivation right yet. It's just a little daunting and unsettling that I have no clue where I'll be living or what I'm going to be doing a year from now.

Painting class tonight really sucked...there have been classes where I felt like I was doing really well and finally felt like a true art major, but the last couple of weeks have just been shitty. I couldn't focus. I only spoke once or twice during the critique, and I wasn't too happy with the way my paintings turned out. And it didn't help that I was feeling crappy from a lack of sleep and food.

The last few nights have been freeeezing in my room, since the heater apparently is broken. And it doesn't help that the showers aren't much warmer.

The weather sucks too. I hate that it's cold, rainy, and it gets dark around 5. It makes the day feel so much longer than it really is, and it makes waking up in the early morning that much harder.

I really need to start exercising or something. Obviously not because I think I'm fat or anything, but I just feel the need to actively DO something. I hate the gym, though, and its getting too cold to go running. If there was a place to go dancing around here (other than Lando's, haha) that would probably be enough. I just need to do some cardio every once in a while and release some endorphins or something.

I wish I knew how I'm doing in all of my classes. I seriously have no idea what my grade is in any of them. I know I'm not failing or anything, but I'd like to know if I'm at least in the A range for most of the classes.

There's probably about a million other things I could bitch about, but I can always save that for another time. I don't want to make it seem like my life is a total shithole. It's not...I still have time to have fun and hang out with people, just not as often as I'd like. At least venting about everything has made me feel better already. As dumb as it sounds, this journal entry has been somewhat of a therapeutic little experience, and hopefully now I'll be able to get a decent amount of sleep tonight.

It seems so surreal that my junior year of college is almost over. Less than two weeks and I’m officially a senior. It seems like just yesterday I was packing up my belongings, ready to plunge into the unknown that would become my freshman year of college. I was excited and a little scared at the same time. Now, almost three years later, I’m still feeling those same emotions. I only have one year of school left, and then it’s off into the real world I go. I still don’t know exactly what I want to do after college, but I definitely don’t want to stay in Elmira or Waverly. I need to get out and experience the world and all it has to offer. There are so many places I want to go and things I want to do.

In retrospect, this year had its share of ups and downs, but the positives definitely outweighed the negatives. I finally turned 21, took some fun road trips, got better grades, made new friends, and just tried to have as much fun as possible. Three years ago, I remember my orientation leaders telling me that my freshman year would pass by in the blink of an eye, and that each year would fly by even faster than the last. Freshman year ended much faster than I expected, and I didn’t want to believe that the next three years would go by even faster than that. Now, though, I have to admit that my OLs were right. It’s bittersweet. I’m anxious to see what the future holds, but at the same time, I don’t want to completely let go of the past. I ran into Jen the other day and we got talking and realized that it’s been a long time since we all hung out. Sometimes I miss freshman year and all of our immature, naive moments. We had a lot of fun, and it’s kind of disappointing that “The Korner” just isn’t the same as it used to be. But I guess that’s life; things change and people change. I’m not saying that things are better or worse, just different.

You can never predict where life is going to take you. I definitely like that aspect, even if I’m not always prepared for it. The only thing I know for certain is that you have to enjoy life and have as much fun as you can, while you still can. And that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

I'm at work, extremely bored, with absolutely nothing to do. And I have to sit here for another 5 hours...I can hardly contain my joy. Not to mention that I can't listen to my ipod because the battery needs recharging, despite the fact that I just charged it last night and haven't so much as listened to one song since. I really hope the battery doesnt need to be replaced already, because those things can get pretty pricey.

So now I just need to find about 100 more surveys and maybe I won't be bored all day, haha. Or maybe if I get really, really bored I'll finally create a Myspace account! We'll see about that one though.

Ok...so far today, I've organized and cleaned the room, worked at the coffee cart for 4 hours, started packing to go home tomorrow, read Cosmo, went for a short run (and realized I'm not as out of shape as I thought I was), sold some books back, ordered a really random tee-shirt online, and updated my livejournal with something other than a survey for once (which of course means that I'm really procrastinating now).

One thing I have yet to do is start my 6-8 page term paper...which is due tomorrow afternoon. At least I have the title figured out :P
